Each of us has a list of things we feel are the hardest things to do in life. Some have one in particular, but most people can't decide which one on their list is the worst. I'm one of the many. To most people, death or the lost of a loved one, physical illneses, moral choices or just choices that have to be made, sacrifices and many more top the list. As life goes on, we discover more and more hardhips and these hardships are added on to our list. We go through them with whatever strength we have and hopefully, one day, they will be removed from our list.
Lately, I've been forced to face one of my most difficult things to do in life; to be truly happy for someone who has something/the things that you don't have but want. Which brings me to a question: Is it possible to be truly happy for someone who has it better than you, when you want the things that the other person has? Notice the bolded word, truly. If I were to ask this question to people in general, some would say that it is possible. But what if all they're doing is convincing themselves that they're happy, when deep down somewhere inside their hearts, there is actually envy.
Each of us has our own set of wants and desires. Some attainable, some not. The one's that are unattainable to us might be attainable to others. There will always be someone who is better, richer, more good looking, smarter, more liked than us. How do we deal with this? Do we envy the ones who are beter, or do we try as hard as we can to be happy for them?
I guess the choice that is psychologically healthier is to be happy for the person. But if this is not possible, aren't we torturing ourselves even more? Won't forcing ourselves to feel a certain way only cause more harm then good? Being envious/jealous, however, isn't rewarding either. We lose our friends, our character, our warmth and we become jealous, cold people. We lose the ability to accept others for who they are, and thus become lonely people. So what choice do we have? It's a lose-lose situation as I see it.
I guess the only way to deal with this rut we are ever so often in is to tackle it from the core; Be happy with what we have. If we can find a way to be happy and contented with what we have, there is no need to feel envious or jealous of the better lives other people lead or the fancier things other people have. There will always be someone better out there. But accepting the life we have is truly a remarkable thing to do. Now this, is very possible. However, it is also another thing on my list of the hardest things to do in life....
No one said life was going to be easy.
